Today, the Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA) proudly announces the kick-off of “Hear and Now: Understanding the economic power and potential of Canada’s live music industry,” marking the first-ever Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) of the live music sector in Canada.

This study comes at a critical moment in time, as parts of the industry continue to face a wide range of obstacles; from rising costs to labor shortages. Upon completion, this project will play a key role in equipping the industry, and the CLMA, with comprehensive data that will help the sector address current challenges and opportunities, as well as plan for the future. As a first step, and in order to gather the necessary data to tell the comprehensive story of the sector, the CLMA and consulting firm Nordicity, are launching a survey directed at all those who work in the Canadian live music industry. The survey will serve as the tool for the sector to engage, provide their input, and help make history.

Hear and Now will quantify the direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts of the live music sector, including tourism and fiscal impacts at the national level. Additionally, the study will explore a range of economic indicators, spanning GDP, employment, income, tax revenues, and overall business activity. The findings in the EIA will form a cornerstone for evaluating existing policies, shaping future implementation strategies, and fostering meaningful discussion among stakeholders.

Who Should Complete the Survey?

The industry’s involvement is essential. Harnessing the potential of our industry requires data. We need input from every company and organization, regardless of size, to contribute to this research. The project’s survey is directed at, and intended to be completed by, the live music industry as a whole. “Live music industry” means any industry association, business, organization or individual involved in any aspect of concert production, promotion and/or execution (e.g. artists, venues, festivals, agents, promoters, publicists, managers, suppliers, technicians, and staff). We encourage the broader sector to share it with their live music networks to maximize its reach and impact. Every voice counts!

Survey Close Date: Thursday, June 6th, 2024

Together, let’s harness the power of data to enact positive change and secure the ongoing growth and prosperity of Canada’s cultural landscape. Play your part in making history, and take the survey today!
