Tourism Growth Strategy submission - Resulting in "festivals and events" being eligible to apply for the Tourism Growth Plan.
#FutureOfLIVE campaign - An ad-hoc coalition of CLMA, FAME, and led by CAPACOA came together in ongoing advocacy to federal government for the extension and renewal of funding programs critical to live performing arts.
Building relationships with government - Meeting with members of federal, provincial, and municipal governments to communicate the economic, social, and cultural value of live music and to consult on issues impacting the sector.
Reflections on Labour Challenges study - With Nordicity, the CLMA researched and reported on labour gaps and barriers in the live music industry in Ontario (funded by Ontario Creates BIP). Hosted open houses in Toronto, London, and Ottawa including stakeholders across live music ecosystems: employers, workers, people who have left the industry.
Fall Economic Statement - The CLMA released a statement in response to the federal 2023 Fall Economic Statement, which contained no support for live music activity. “Yet again, the federal government has left Canadian music and musicians out of their budget. Countries around the world are announcing new investments to attract concert-goers and leverage the remarkable growth and momentum in the live music sector,” said Erin Benjamin, President & CEO.
Federal Budget 2023 - The CLMA’s 2023-24 pre-budget submission included 3 asks to support the live music sector:
Increase the Canada Music Fund (CMF) permanently to $60M; preserve existing programs and earmark $10M for a new, live music-specific program inside the CMF;
Make permanent the supplementary investments of $8 million per year in CAPF program and $7M per year in the BCAH program;
Invest an additional $30M per year in these two programs ($21M for CAPF and $9M for BCAH).
Insurance advocacy - Working to improve market conditions for members by leading conversations and building capacity in sector.
SOCAN Tariff 4.A - Engaging with the Copyright Board on tariffs and fees that impact live music companies.
Request for renewal of recovery fund in BC - A letter calling for the renewal the Fairs, Festivals and Recovery grant program at previous levels.
Consulting with municipal police, Ottawa and Surrey - Initiating a better relationship between live music and local police services to enable safer and more vibrant communities.
“Impact of live music on tourism’s bottom line” session - Conducted at Tourism Industry Association of Canada Tourism Congress, connecting with Canada’s leading tourism stakeholders on the power of live music.
City of Music Conference - The CLMA consulted with Tourism London on the first City of Music Conference. The CLMA’s Erin Benjamin additionally moderated the panel “Driving Recovery Through Music Tourism”.
City of Toronto Night Economy Consultation - CLMA staff attended “Night Economy Review: Performance/Live Spaces”, a closed consultation on licensing and zoning regulations for bars, restaurants, and entertainment.
City of Mississauga Culture Plan Consultation - CLMA staff consulted on “2024 Future Directions Culture Plan” to help shape the services offered by the City of Mississauga’s Culture Division. CLMA supports and champions the work of other associations doing critical advocacy in the broader tourism sector such as TIAC, for example on CEBA loan repayment extensions.
City of Ottawa Nightlife Economic Action Plan - CLMA deposition in favour of plan which includes a new live music venue.
